The traditions · Hermetic Lots
What arrives and what you set in motion are not the same.
A lot isn’t a planet. It’s a point worked out from your chart, and it has plenty to say.
Each lot measures the arc between two bodies in your chart, then projects that same arc forward from your ascendant. The result is a sensitive degree the traditional texts read as a distinct subject in its own right.
Lots are among the oldest techniques in Hellenistic astrology, used by Vettius Valens and Paulus Alexandrinus in the first centuries CE, and greatly expanded by medieval Arabic astrologers, which is why they are also called Arabic Parts.
What it calculates
- The Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit
- Eros, Necessity, Courage, Victory and Nemesis
- Whether your chart is a day or a night birth
- Each lot's sign, house and condition
- How the lots relate to the rest of your placements
What it brings to your Manual
Fortune is what lands in your lap and what you’ve got to work with. Spirit is what you set in motion. Together, they show the difference between the hand you were dealt and how you play it.
- WEALTH & SELF-WORTH: The Lot of Fortune, which this tradition ties to the body and to what comes to you.
- CAREER & INDIVIDUALITY: The Lot of Spirit: what you make happen on purpose.
- WISDOM & SELF-KNOWLEDGE: Necessity and Nemesis: your limits and your reckonings, which aren’t the same as your faults.
Fortune is what you are given. Spirit is what you do with it.
Fortune is calculated from the Moon and read as the given: the body, the circumstances, the material you did not choose. Spirit is calculated from the Sun and read as the chosen: intention, action, what you do with the material.
The pair is why lots sit so naturally in this map. The whole reading turns on the same distinction: what was dealt, and how it is played.
Day births and night births are read differently.
For a daytime birth, Fortune is measured as ascendant plus Moon minus Sun. For a night birth the Sun and Moon swap places, and Spirit reverses with it.
That reversal is original to the technique, not a modern adjustment. Whether the Sun was above or below the horizon when you were born changes which luminary leads, so your birth time matters here as much as it does for the houses.
The seven lots are read as a family, not as verdicts.
Beyond Fortune and Spirit, the Hermetic set adds Eros for desire, Necessity for constraint, Courage for boldness, Victory for alliance and success, and Nemesis for limits and loss.
They are read as a family around Fortune and Spirit rather than as seven separate verdicts. A lot in difficult condition describes a pressure the tradition recognises, not a sentence.
