The traditions · Timing
Every year picks one part of your life to make a fuss about.
Some years are visibly about work. Others are about home, or about someone.
That is not only circumstance. Several traditional techniques describe a rotation: one area of life moving into focus each year, then handing over to the next.
The oldest of them is annual profection, a Hellenistic time-lord method described by Vettius Valens and Firmicus Maternus. It is also the simplest: the focus advances one sign on every birthday and returns to the start every twelve years.
What it calculates
- Which sign and area of life this year is about (your profection)
- The planet running your year, and how it’s doing in your chart
- Monthly profections inside the year
- Your solar return, reset each birthday
- The slower background cycles running underneath
What it brings to your Manual
Timing tells your map which part of life a period is about. It describes the focus of a year, not what will happen in it.
- CAREER & INDIVIDUALITY: The years that bring work, direction and visibility forward.
- RELATIONSHIPS & PARTNERSHIPS: The years that are all about partnership.
- FAMILY & COMMUNITY: The years that pull you back to home and roots.
The focus moves one sign on every birthday.
At birth the year is focused on the first house. Each birthday it advances one sign: resources, then communication, then home, and on around the wheel.
Because the cycle is twelve years long, the ages rhyme: what was true at twelve is a theme again at twenty-four and thirty-six. Looking back at those years is the most honest test of whether the technique says anything to you.
Each year has a planet holding it.
The planet that rules the activated sign becomes the year's time lord. Its placement in your birth chart, and the movements it makes during that year, are read as carrying more weight than usual.
This is why two people can be under the same transit and have entirely different years. The transit is shared; which planet is holding the year is not.
Fast cycles are weather. Slow cycles are climate.
Fast-moving influences describe the next few days. Slow cycles describe the season you are inside. The reading keeps them separate, because they answer different questions and mixing them makes both vaguer.
None of it establishes what will happen. It describes the themes a period is associated with, and leaves the week to you.
