Gate 42 is about expansion and the capacity to grow and multiply

The question this key keeps asking: “Will it turn out the way I hoped? Why didn’t it?”
The Shadow, Expectation. You arrive with a picture of how it should go: the holiday, the celebration, the relationship, the year. Reality arrives slightly different, and you feel let down before you have enjoyed it. The people involved feel themselves failing a test they never saw. Everything is measured against the picture.
The Gift, Detachment. The way through is to finish things fully and then let them go. Put real effort into the middle, mark the end, close the door. That’s Detachment: caring fully while it is happening and loosening your grip on how it lands.
The Siddhi, Celebration: celebrating every ending and beginning alike, because you see that nothing really dies and every cycle is worth rejoicing in.
Expectation spends the whole thing grading it. Detachment gets to be there.
