What are the 64 gates in Human Design?

The short answer: Human Design describes 64 gates, one for each of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. They sit around the zodiac wheel and inside the nine centres of the bodygraph, and a gate is activated in your chart when the Sun, Moon, a lunar node or a planet stood in its slice of the zodiac at birth, or at the Design moment some three months earlier. Each gate carries one theme. When both gates at the ends of a channel light up, they define the two centres that channel connects.

What a gate is

Human Design divides the zodiac into 64 equal segments of 5.625°, each named after an I Ching hexagram. Gate 1 is The Creative and Gate 2 The Receptive, following the hexagrams’ traditional titles. Each gate is further divided into six lines, which is where the numbers in a Profile come from.

Every gate also lives in one of the nine centres. On the bodygraph (the body-shaped chart) it’s the little stub on the edge of a centre, pointing at the gate on the other end of its channel.

Which gates belong to which centre

The gates aren’t shared out evenly. The Throat gets the most, eleven, because it’s where every other centre’s energy comes out. The Heart gets four.

Activated and hanging gates

A gate is activated wherever the Sun, Moon, nodes or a planet lands, once in the Personality chart (at birth) and once in the Design chart (when the Sun was 88° earlier). The first set is conscious, the stuff you recognise in yourself. The second is unconscious, the stuff other people notice first.

An activated gate whose partner across the channel isn’t activated is called a hanging gate. It doesn’t define anything on its own. It’s a theme that keeps reaching for its other half, and when you’re with someone who carries that gate, the channel clicks on. Ever met someone and felt weirdly complete? That might be why.

Gates that aren’t activated in your chart aren’t missing. They’re themes you pick up from other people and from the planets moving overhead, rather than ones you carry all the time.

Reading a single gate

Each gate has a name, a theme, and a good-day and a bad-day version. Gate 34, in the Sacral, is The Power of the Great: power, and the drive to use it. Gate 13, in the G centre, is The Listener: the one people tell their stories to, whether they meant to or not.

Read a gate in context: which centre it sits in, whether it’s conscious or unconscious, whether it completes a channel, and which line it falls on. The same gate can look like two different people in two charts.

The tradition: Gene Keys uses the same 64 spots on the wheel, at the same degrees, with its own names and its own Shadow, Gift and Siddhi language. Related systems, not the same one.

Gates in your Manual

A gate shows up where your Manual talks about the same part of life as its centre. We read it next to your other charts, each one a different lens on the same you. How we weigh them stays our little secret.

Hanging gates complete through other people, so they tend to show up around the people who have your back.

Common questions

How many gates are activated in a chart?

Each chart activates a gate for every body the system uses, twice: once at birth and once at the Design moment. Some gates are activated more than once, so the number of distinct gates varies from chart to chart.

Are the gates the same as the I Ching hexagrams?

Human Design maps one gate to each of the 64 hexagrams and uses their traditional names, but reads them in its own way, inside the bodygraph.

What is a hanging gate?

An activated gate whose partner gate across the channel is not activated in your chart. It does not define a centre on its own.

Do I need a birth time to know my gates?

Most gates are stable across a day, but the Moon moves quickly, and lines can change within hours. An accurate time gives the most reliable result.
