What is a Profile in Human Design?
The short answer: In Human Design, your Profile is the pair of numbers written like 1/3 or 5/1. Each number is a line from one to six: the first comes from the Sun in your Personality (conscious) chart, the second from the Sun in your Design (unconscious) chart. There are twelve Profiles, and together the two numbers describe the role you tend to play, how you learn, and how people tend to see you.
The six lines
Every gate in Human Design splits into six lines, and each line has a name and a theme. Your Profile is two of them. Don’t panic about the names: ‘Martyr’ and ‘Heretic’ are about how you learn and how you’re seen, not about your character.
| Line | Theme |
|---|---|
| 1 · Investigator | Builds a secure foundation through research before moving. |
| 2 · Hermit | Natural talent that develops in privacy and is called out by others. |
| 3 · Martyr | Learns through trial and error, discovering what does not work. |
| 4 · Opportunist | Influence and opportunity through a network of close relationships. |
| 5 · Heretic | Others look to them for practical solutions, with the expectations that brings. |
| 6 · Role Model | Learns through experience, then becomes an example over a longer life arc. |
What the two numbers mean
Here’s the twist: a Human Design chart is calculated twice. The Personality chart uses the planets at the moment you were born. The Design chart uses a moment about three months earlier, when the Sun sat 88° behind its birth position. Your first number is the line of the Personality Sun, the second is the line of the Design Sun.
The first (conscious) number is the part you recognise in yourself. The second (unconscious) number is the part other people often spot before you do. A 2/4, for example, may think of themselves as someone who needs time alone to get good at something, while friends keep dragging that skill out into the open.
The twelve Profiles
There are thirty-six possible pairs, but only twelve ever show up. The two Suns are always 88° apart and every line covers the same small slice of the zodiac, so each first number can only land with two second numbers.
| Profile | Name |
|---|---|
| 1/3 | Investigator / Martyr |
| 1/4 | Investigator / Opportunist |
| 2/4 | Hermit / Opportunist |
| 2/5 | Hermit / Heretic |
| 3/5 | Martyr / Heretic |
| 3/6 | Martyr / Role Model |
| 4/6 | Opportunist / Role Model |
| 4/1 | Opportunist / Investigator |
| 5/1 | Heretic / Investigator |
| 5/2 | Heretic / Hermit |
| 6/2 | Role Model / Hermit |
| 6/3 | Role Model / Martyr |
Reading your Profile
Read each line on its own, then the pair. A 1/3 mixes deep research with learning by trial and error, which can feel like getting it wrong a few times on the way to knowing it cold. A 5/1 gets looked to for solutions and needs solid ground under every one of them.
Profiles with a 6 come in phases: a first stretch of trial and error, like a 3 line, then a step back, then a later stretch of living as the example. The tradition puts the shifts roughly around thirty and fifty. Rough markers, not birthdays to circle.
Profile comes after Type and Authority, not instead of them. It adds flavour to how you show up. It doesn’t change your Strategy.
The tradition: Profile is part of the standard Human Design chart. It depends on the exact line of each Sun, so a wrong birth time can occasionally change it if a Sun sits near the edge of a line.
Profile in your Manual
Your Incarnation Manual shows your Profile in its Human Design section, next to Type, Strategy and Authority. Its themes of role and visibility show up where the Manual talks about being seen. We read it next to your other charts, each one a different lens on the same you. How we weigh them stays our little secret.

Common questions
Which number matters more?
Neither. The tradition reads them as a pair: the first is the conscious side you identify with, the second the unconscious side others tend to notice.
Why is there no 1/5 or 3/1 Profile?
Because the Personality Sun and Design Sun are always 88° apart, each first line can only pair with two second lines. That leaves twelve combinations.
Can my Profile change?
Not in the standard chart. If your birth time is uncertain, check whether either line changes across the possible range.
Is my Profile the same as my Type?
No. Type describes how you engage and use energy; Profile describes the role and learning style the tradition associates with your two Sun lines.
