What are the nine centres in Human Design?

The short answer: Human Design describes nine centres in the bodygraph: Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart (also called Ego or Will), Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen and Root. A centre is defined, and coloured in, when a complete channel connects it to another centre. Otherwise it’s undefined and left white. Defined centres are the parts of you that run the same way no matter who’s around. Undefined centres are where you soak up other people’s energy, for better and for worse.

The nine centres and their themes

Each centre runs one part of your life. Here’s the tradition’s version, short.

The nine centres in Human Design and the theme each is associated with
CentreTheme
HeadInspiration and questions; the pressure to wonder.
AjnaConceptual thinking; turning information into understanding.
ThroatCommunication and manifestation; expression into the world.
GIdentity and direction: who you are and where you are going.
Heart (Ego, Will)Will and commitment; what you are willing to stand behind.
SacralLife force and work energy, expressed as response.
Solar PlexusEmotion and feeling; clarity that arrives over time.
SpleenInstinct and bodily awareness in the moment.
RootPressure and drive; the urge to get things moving.

Defined and undefined

A centre is defined when at least one complete channel runs from it to another centre, which means both gates of that channel are activated in your chart. One gate on its own doesn’t do it.

A defined centre is your reliable setting: a way of thinking, speaking, feeling or pushing forward that stays pretty much the same whoever you’re with. An undefined centre is open and changeable. You pick up other people’s energy there and turn the volume up. That can make you unusually wise about that part of life. It can also talk you into being someone you’re not.

Everyone has a mix. Most people have several centres defined and several undefined. If every centre is undefined, you’re a Reflector.

The tradition: In Human Design, defined means consistent and undefined means open to other people’s influence (the tradition calls that conditioning). Neither one is better.

How centres shape the rest of the chart

Four centres are motors, the places energy comes from: the Sacral, Root, Solar Plexus and Heart. The Throat is where that energy turns into words and action. Whether a motor reaches the Throat, and whether the Sacral is defined, decides your Type.

Centres decide your Authority too. The tradition checks for a defined Solar Plexus first, then the Sacral, then the Spleen, then the Heart, then the G centre. None of those defined? That’s Mental (or Environmental) Authority. A Reflector has Lunar Authority.

Undefined centres and conditioning

Every undefined centre has its own favourite pressure, which Human Design calls the not-self. An undefined Head feels it has to answer every question. An undefined Sacral keeps working long after the tank is empty. An undefined G thinks it should know exactly who it is and where it’s headed, by yesterday.

The tradition gives each one a gut-check question, like ‘am I talking when I should be listening?’ for an undefined Throat, or ‘am I moving because it’s time, or because I’m rushed?’ for an undefined Root. Things to notice, not rules.

Soul Cartography: We read an undefined centre as something to watch, not something missing. The question we bring: where do you turn into someone slightly different around other people, and is that working for you?

Centres in your Manual

Each centre turns up in the chapters closest to its theme: thinking, voice, direction, will, energy, feeling. We read it next to your other charts, each one a different lens on the same you. How we weigh them stays our little secret.

Common questions

Is it better to have more defined centres?

No. The tradition treats defined and undefined centres as different ways of operating, each with its own strengths.

Why are there nine centres and not seven?

Human Design presents the nine-centre bodygraph as its own model. It resembles the seven-chakra map in places, but the tradition treats it as a separate system.

What is the difference between undefined and open?

Some teachers use ‘open’ for an undefined centre with no activated gates at all, and ‘undefined’ for one with gates but no complete channel. Your chart shows which gates each centre has.

Are the centres medical?

No. The tradition associates each centre with an area of the body, but these are symbolic correspondences, not medical findings or advice.

Where do I see my centres?

In your free Human Design chart: defined centres are coloured in, undefined ones are white.
