What are the 36 channels in Human Design?
The short answer: Human Design describes 36 channels, each a line in the bodygraph that joins a gate in one centre to a gate in another. A channel is defined when both of its gates are activated in your chart, from the Personality side, the Design side or one of each. Defined channels are what colour in the centres. So, quietly, they decide your Type, your Authority and the whole shape of your chart.
How a channel is defined
Every channel has two ends, and each end is a gate. If both gates are activated, by the Sun, Moon, a node or any planet, at either the birth or the Design moment, the channel is defined and both of its centres get coloured in. If only one is, that gate is a hanging gate and the channel stays open.
Take Gate 34 in the Sacral and Gate 20 in the Throat. Activate both and you get the Channel of Charisma (20–34). That defines the Sacral and the Throat and plugs a motor straight into the Throat, so the chart is a Manifesting Generator, whatever else is going on.
A defined channel is one of the steadiest things about you: a fixed line between two parts of your life that doesn’t need anyone else to switch on. It also has its own personality, which is more than its two gates added together.
The 36 channels by the centres they join
Here they are, grouped by the two centres they connect. Teachers name a few of them differently. These are the names our chart uses.

Single, split and more: the shape of definition
Once the defined channels are drawn, your defined centres form one or more connected islands. One island is single definition. Two is split definition. Three and four are triple split and quadruple split. No defined channels at all means no definition, and that’s a Reflector.
A split is two steady parts of you that don’t talk to each other directly. The tradition says people with a split are often drawn to whoever carries the gate that bridges the gap. Yes, that can explain a crush or two. A single definition is more self-contained and processes things on its own.
The tradition: Definition is part of the standard Human Design chart. Channels are also grouped into circuits, which say whether a channel’s theme leans individual, collective or tribal (about your people).
Reading your channels
Start with any channel that joins a motor to the Throat, since that shapes your Type. Then the one that defines the centre behind your Authority. After that, read each channel as a theme: which two parts of your life it joins, and how often you catch that link in yourself.
A channel is one part of the chart, not the whole story. Two people can share a channel and come across completely differently because of everything else they carry.
Soul Cartography: We treat a defined channel as one of the most reliable things a Human Design chart tells you.
Channels in your Manual
A channel joins two centres, so it can show up in more than one chapter. We read it next to your other charts, each one a different lens on the same you. How we weigh them stays our little secret.
A split definition gets bridged by other people, so it tends to show up around the people who have your back.

Common questions
Do both gates need to be on the same side of the chart?
No. A channel is defined if both gates are activated anywhere in the chart, conscious, unconscious or one of each.
What happens if I only have one gate of a channel?
That gate is a hanging gate. It does not define the channel or either centre on its own.
Can another person complete my channel?
The tradition says so: when someone else carries the missing gate, the channel is defined between you while you are together. It is not part of your own chart.
How many channels does a typical chart have?
It varies widely, from none in a Reflector’s chart to many. The number says nothing about how good a chart is.
Which channel decides my Type?
Any channel that, alone or in a chain, joins a motor centre to the Throat, together with whether the Sacral is defined.
