Mercury in Capricorn: your thinking is strategic, structured and aimed at outcomes
Mercury is the mind: how you think, learn and talk.
Your thinking is strategic, structured and aimed at outcomes. You plan before you speak, and your mind builds things that last. The shadow is dismissing ideas that have no immediate use.
Capricorn is earth, cardinal and ruled by Saturn
The element sets the temperament: fire acts, earth builds, air connects, water feels. The modality sets the motion: cardinal starts, fixed holds, mutable adapts. The ruler is the planet that carries the sign’s agenda.
Your Mercury may be in Capricorn in one zodiac and not the other
The tropical zodiac is tied to the seasons; the sidereal zodiac to the stars. They have drifted about 24 degrees apart, almost a whole sign. So a planet in the first two-thirds of tropical Aquarius usually sits in sidereal Capricorn, and a tropical Capricorn Mercury is often sidereal Sagittarius.
Neither is wrong. The tropical chart describes how you meet the world; the sidereal chart is the sky as it actually stood. We read both, plus True Sky and the draconic chart, and make sense of all four as one picture.

Is my Mercury in Capricorn sidereal or tropical?
It depends on the degree. The zodiacs are about 24° apart, so a late-Capricorn tropical Mercury is usually sidereal Capricorn too, while an early one is sidereal Sagittarius. Your chart settles it.
