Day chart vs night chart
The short answer: In Hellenistic astrology every chart is either a day chart or a night chart, depending on whether the Sun was above or below the horizon at birth. The division is called sect. It changes which planets the tradition gives the lead: the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn belong to the day; the Moon, Venus and Mars to the night. It isn’t two charts. It’s one fact about your chart, set by the time and place you were born.
Day chart and Night chart, side by side
| Day chart | Night chart | |
|---|---|---|
| Set by | The Sun above the horizon at birth | The Sun below the horizon at birth |
| Sect light | The Sun | The Moon |
| Planets of the sect | Sun, Jupiter and Saturn | Moon, Venus and Mars |
| Benefic of the sect | Jupiter | Venus |
| Malefic contrary to sect | Mars, read as the more difficult malefic | Saturn, read as the more difficult malefic |
| Mercury | Counts as diurnal when it rises before the Sun | Counts as nocturnal when it sets after the Sun |
| Lot of Fortune | Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun | The Sun and Moon swap places, and the Lot of Spirit reverses with it |
| In your Manual | Your Hermetic Lots use the day formulas | Your Hermetic Lots use the night formulas |
whether a day or a night birth is better. Sect says which planets get the lead. It doesn’t rank charts, or people.
What each one reads
Day chart
The tradition gives the day planets, the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn, the stronger role; Jupiter is the more helpful benefic and Mars the more difficult malefic.
It names: Sun above the horizon, Sun as sect light, Jupiter as benefic of sect, Mars as malefic contrary to sect.
Night chart
The tradition gives the night planets, the Moon, Venus and Mars, the stronger role; Venus is the more helpful benefic and Saturn the more difficult malefic.
It names: Sun below the horizon, Moon as sect light, Venus as benefic of sect, Saturn as malefic contrary to sect.

Birth chart
With a birth time, the wheel shows the Sun against the horizon, the line from ascendant to descendant.
Birth chart
Below the horizon line means a night chart. Your Manual states your sect and uses it in the Hermetic Lots.
Common questions
How do I know if I have a day or a night chart?
Find the Sun relative to the horizon, the line from ascendant to descendant. Above it is a day chart; below it, a night chart. You need a birth time and place to tell.
What if I was born near sunrise or sunset?
Then sect can turn on a few minutes. When the uncertainty in a birth time spans sunrise or sunset, Soul Cartography marks sect as uncertain rather than choosing one.
Is a night chart worse than a day chart?
No. The tradition treats them as two arrangements, each with its own more helpful and more difficult planets. Neither is ranked above the other.
Does every astrologer use sect?
No. It comes from Hellenistic astrology and is not part of every modern approach. Soul Cartography applies it where that tradition does, such as the Hermetic Lots.
