What is your birth card in Cardology?

The short answer: In Cardology, your birth card is the playing card that belongs to your birthday. It is found from your birth month and day alone: 55 minus twice the month, minus the day, gives a number from 1 to 52 that names one card. People born on 31 December get the Joker. Your birth card is the core of who you are in Cardology, and everything else in the reading is built around it.

How the birth card is found

Cardology gives each of the 52 cards a solar value from 1 to 52. The hearts come first, Ace to King as 1 to 13, then clubs as 14 to 26, diamonds as 27 to 39, and spades as 40 to 52.

To find your card, multiply your birth month by two, add the day, and subtract the result from 55. The answer is your card’s solar value.

For 14 October: 2 × 10 + 14 = 34, and 55 − 34 = 21. The twenty-first card is the eighth of the second suit, so the birth card is the Eight of Clubs. On 1 January the answer is 52, the King of Spades; the year is never used.

Soul Cartography: We look your card up in a fixed table of all 366 birthdays instead of working it out on the fly. We’ve checked that table against the formula, and it agrees on every single date.

The Joker and 31 December

On 31 December the formula gives 55 − (24 + 31) = 0, which isn’t a card. So Cardology hands that one day to the Joker.

The Joker doesn’t sit in the spreads the other cards move through, so the life spread, yearly cards and planetary periods don’t work the usual way for it. Cardology says Joker birthdays can take on the qualities of many cards. Of course they can.

What your card means

Cardology reads the suit and the rank separately. The suit is the part of life: hearts for love and relationships, clubs for knowledge and the mind, diamonds for values and money, spades for change and wisdom. The rank adds its own quality, from the fresh start of the Ace to the mastery of the King.

Each birthday also gets a planetary ruling card, which is how you carry your birth card out into the world. And your birth card sits in a life spread and a run of dated periods through each year. It all starts from the birth card.

The tradition: Cardology as practised today goes back to Olney H. Richmond’s The Mystic Test Book (1893) and was developed in the books of Robert Lee Camp.

Birth card in your Manual

Your birth card’s themes of effort and direction, how you carry it into the world, and how it gets along with other people’s cards all show up in your Manual. We read it next to your other charts, each one a different lens on the same you. How we weigh them stays our little secret.

Common questions

Does my birth year matter?

Not for the birth card. It comes from month and day alone. The year is used later, for the yearly cards and periods.

Is the birth card linked to my Sun sign?

Not directly. The birth card comes from the date; the planetary ruling card is the one Cardology ties to your astrological sign.

What if I was born on 29 February?

The formula still works: 55 − (4 + 29) = 22, the Nine of Clubs.

Can two people share a birth card?

Yes. Several birthdays share each card, because 365 days are spread across 52 cards.
