What is a Life Path number, and how is it calculated?

The short answer: In numerology, the Life Path number is the single number reduced from your full date of birth. You reduce the month, day and year separately, add them, and keep reducing until one digit remains. The master numbers 11, 22 and 33 stay as they are wherever they appear, in a part of the date or in the total. It’s read as the broad direction of your life, the themes you keep circling back to. Not a job title, and not a prophecy.

How to calculate it

Reduce each part of the date separately by adding its digits until one digit is left, stopping at 11, 22 or 33, the master numbers. Then add the three results and reduce the total the same way.

Take 29 July 1987. The month is 7. The day, 29, gives 2 + 9 = 11, a master number, so it stays 11. The year gives 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25, then 2 + 5 = 7. Adding them, 7 + 11 + 7 = 25, and 2 + 5 = 7. The Life Path is 7.

If the total is 11, 22 or 33, it stays that way instead of dropping to 2, 4 or 6. The free calculator and your Manual both work like this, and the calculator shows its working.

Where methods differ

Numerologists land on the same single digit for almost every date, because adding digits in a different order gives the same remainder. The fight is over master numbers. Some add every digit at once. Some shrink the month, day and year to single digits and only keep a master number in the final total. Many, like us, keep 11, 22 or 33 wherever one shows up.

That choice can decide whether you’re a master number at all. Born on 2 November 1980? Keep the month as 11, the year reduces to 9, and 11 + 2 + 9 = 22. Shrink the month to 2 first and you get 2 + 2 + 9 = 13, which becomes 4. Same birthday, very different story.

Soul Cartography: We use one method everywhere: the free calculator, your Manual and every report keep master numbers wherever they appear, so your date always gives the same number here. A site that does it differently may disagree for a handful of dates.

What each number means

Each number comes with a handful of themes. Think of these as the trailer, not the movie.

How to use it

People treat their Life Path like a verdict. It works better as a test: where have these themes shown up in your life, and where haven’t they? The bits that don’t fit are as interesting as the bits that do.

Numerology reads it next to your other core numbers. Your Expression and Soul Urge numbers come from your name, not your birthday, so they’re a second opinion from a different source.

The tradition: Numerology also looks at the total before its final reduction. If it passes through 13, 14, 16 or 19, the tradition calls that a karmic debt number: an extra lesson riding along with your Life Path.

Life Path in your Manual

Your Incarnation Manual reads the Life Path as a direction, not a job title. We read it next to your other charts, each one a different lens on the same you. How we weigh them stays our little secret.

Common questions

Is a master number better?

No. Within the tradition, 11, 22 and 33 describe a more demanding version of 2, 4 and 6, not a higher rank.

Can my Life Path change?

No. It comes from your birth date. The personal year, month and day cycles change, and numerology reads those against it.

Why do two calculators give me different numbers?

Usually because they treat master numbers differently. Check whether one kept 11 or 22 in the month, day or year and the other reduced it.

Does it tell me what job to do?

Not as a job title. It’s the themes your life keeps coming back to, which you can hold up against the work you already know suits you.
