The Shadow, Weakness. You keep a quiet ledger. You give, you help, you show up, and somewhere a column is being filled in. Or you go the other way and keep people at a distance so you never owe anyone. Either way, love at home begins to feel like a transaction, and everyone can sense the account.
The Gift, Equality. The way through is to give without counting and to say plainly what you need instead of earning it. Both, out loud. That’s Equality: nobody above, nobody below, nobody keeping score. Families, friendships and teams relax when someone goes first.
