What Is a Birth Chart?
The short answer: A birth chart is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the moment and place you were born, drawn against the zodiac and the horizon. Astrologers read it in five layers: the planets, the signs they’re in, the houses they land in, the angles between them (aspects), and the chart’s four corners (angles). Your birth date sets most of it. Your birth time and place set the houses and angles, which is why astrologers always ask what time you were born.
The five layers of a chart
A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a snapshot of the sky from one place at one minute. Astrology reads it as a symbol of you, not a photo of space. Each layer answers a different question, and the reading comes from putting them together.
| Layer | What astrologers read it for |
|---|---|
| Planets | What is acting: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and in modern practice the outer planets. |
| Signs | How it acts: the style or manner the twelve zodiac signs lend to a planet. |
| Houses | Where it acts: the twelve areas of life, from self and resources to partnership and vocation. |
| Aspects | How planets relate: conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines and oppositions. |
| Angles | The ascendant, descendant, midheaven and lower midheaven: the chart’s orientation to the horizon and meridian. |
Planets, signs and houses
The planets are the cast. The older tradition uses seven you can see with your eyes, counting the Sun and Moon. Modern astrologers add Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, and sometimes asteroids and calculated points like the lunar nodes.
Each planet sits in one of the twelve signs, and the sign sets its style. Mars in Aries and Mars in Libra are the same planet with very different manners. The outer planets take years to change sign. The Moon does it in about two and a half days, which explains a lot about the Moon.
The houses split the sky around your birthplace into twelve sections, each one a part of life. They turn with the Earth, so they depend on your exact birth time. There are several ways to draw them: whole-sign houses are the oldest, and Placidus is the one most modern charts use.
Aspects and angles
Aspects are the angles between planets, and a few of them count: a conjunction (planets together), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°) and opposition (180°). Trines and sextiles are the easy ones. Squares and oppositions are the tense ones, though most astrologers will tell you tension is where the growth is. Annoying, but true.
The angles are where the horizon and the overhead line (the meridian) cross the Sun’s path (the ecliptic). The ascendant, or rising sign, is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born, and astrologers lean on it hard for temperament and the body. The midheaven is about career and how the public sees you.
Why your birth time matters
The ascendant spins through the whole zodiac in about a day, roughly one sign every two hours. A few minutes can push a house edge or your rising sign into the next sign. A few hours can rearrange every house and move the Moon.
Time also decides sect: whether you’re a day chart or a night chart, depending on whether the Sun was above or below the horizon. Don’t know your time? The planets in signs and most aspects still work. Just hold the houses, angles and sect loosely.
The tradition: A birth chart is calculated the standard way from your birth date, time and place. Tropical and sidereal zodiacs can put the same planet in different signs. That’s a different ruler, not a different sky.
The birth chart in your Manual
Your Incarnation Manual reads your birth chart four ways: tropical, sidereal, draconic and true-sky. Placements feed the realm readings and the timing views, and you can tap through to the placement behind any line.
Astrology is one voice in the room, not the whole room. We read it next to your other charts, each one a different lens on the same you. How we weigh them stays our little secret.

Common questions
Can I read my chart without a birth time?
Partly. Planets in signs and most aspects come from the date. The ascendant, houses, the Moon’s exact degree and the chart’s sect depend on the time, so treat those as provisional.
Is my birth chart the same as my star sign?
Your star sign is usually your Sun sign, one placement among many. The birth chart includes the Moon, the planets, the ascendant and the houses as well.
Why do two websites give me different signs?
Most often because one uses the tropical zodiac and the other the sidereal. They measure from different starting points, so placements can differ by about one sign.
Does the chart change over time?
The natal chart does not; it is fixed at birth. Astrologers compare it with the moving sky, through transits and other timing techniques, to read change.
