What Is a Day Chart in Astrology?
The short answer: A day chart, or diurnal chart, is a birth chart in which the Sun was above the horizon at the moment of birth. In Hellenistic astrology that makes the Sun your chart’s team captain, Jupiter your most helpful planet and Saturn your more manageable troublemaker. Mars is the one working against the grain. It’s one half of what astrologers call sect.
How to recognise a day chart
Find the Sun in your chart, and the flat line running from the ascendant on the left to the descendant on the right. Sun above the line, in houses 7 to 12? Day chart. Put simply, you were born between sunrise and sunset where you were born.
A Sun in the twelfth house, just above the ascendant, means you arrived shortly after sunrise. A Sun in the seventh, just above the descendant, means shortly before sunset. Those two edges are where a rounded birth time can trip you up.
Who plays which role in a day chart
In a day chart, each of the seven visible planets gets a role depending on whether it’s on the day team (Sun, Jupiter, Saturn) or the night team (Moon, Venus, Mars). Want the why? The sect article has it.
| Role | In a day chart |
|---|---|
| Sect light | The Sun |
| Benefic of the sect | Jupiter, read as the most reliably helpful planet |
| Malefic of the sect | Saturn, read as tempered: demanding but constructive |
| Benefic contrary to sect | Venus, still helpful but less fully at home |
| Malefic contrary to sect | Mars, read as the more difficult malefic |
| Mercury | In sect when it rises before the Sun as a morning star |
How astrologers read a day chart
The Sun is the captain, so astrologers give its condition (sign, house, aspects and dignity, meaning how comfortable it is in its sign) extra weight in reading your life as a whole. The Moon still matters. It just isn’t leading.
Saturn in a day chart tends to read as structure, staying power and responsibility you can actually carry. Mars, playing for the other team, tends to read as heat without brakes: drive, arguments or rushing that may need handling on purpose. These are tendencies, not guarantees, and a well-placed Mars can still read beautifully.
Sect changes some of the maths too. In a day chart, the Lot of Fortune is measured from the Sun to the Moon and counted out from the ascendant, and the Lot of Spirit runs the other way. Some systems of triplicity rulers (planets that look after each element) also pick a day ruler for each element.
The tradition: A day chart isn’t better or worse than a night chart. Each one gets a calmer troublemaker and a rowdier one.
The day chart in your Manual
If yours is a day chart, your Incarnation Manual uses the day formulas for the Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit, the way the tradition says.
We read it next to your other charts, each one a different lens on the same you. How we weigh them stays our little secret.

Common questions
Was I born in a day chart if I was born in the afternoon?
Usually, if the Sun had not yet set at your birthplace. Winter afternoons at high latitudes can fall after sunset, so check where the Sun is in the chart.
Does a day chart make Mars bad for me?
No. Mars has fewer brakes in a day chart, but its sign, house and aspects still shape how it plays out. It’s a tendency to work with, not a sentence.
Is my Moon less important in a day chart?
It is not the sect light, but astrologers still read it closely, especially for the body, daily life and feeling.
What if my Sun is right on the ascendant or descendant?
Then the birth was near sunrise or sunset, and the sect rests on the exact minute. If your birth time is uncertain, treat the classification as provisional.
