What Is a Night Chart in Astrology?
The short answer: A night chart, or nocturnal chart, is a birth chart in which the Sun was below the horizon at the moment of birth. In Hellenistic astrology that makes the Moon your chart’s team captain, Venus your most helpful planet and Mars your more manageable troublemaker. Saturn is the one working against the grain. It’s the other half of what astrologers call sect.
How to recognise a night chart
Find the Sun in your chart, and the flat line from the ascendant to the descendant. Sun below the line, in houses 1 to 6? Night chart. Put simply, you were born between sunset and sunrise where you were born.
A Sun in the first house, just below the ascendant, means you arrived shortly before sunrise. A Sun in the sixth, just below the descendant, means shortly after sunset. A Sun near the bottom of the chart, around the fourth house, means somewhere near midnight.
Who plays which role in a night chart
A night chart puts the night team (Moon, Venus, Mars) ahead of the day team (Sun, Jupiter, Saturn). Every role flips from a day chart. The sect article has the full line-up and the why.

How astrologers read a night chart
The Moon is the captain, so astrologers give its condition (sign, house, phase, aspects and dignity, meaning how comfortable it is in its sign) extra weight in reading your life as a whole. The Sun still matters. It just isn’t leading.
Mars in a night chart tends to read as energy and nerve you can aim. Saturn, playing for the other team, tends to read heavier: delays, limits or lonely stretches that take longer to work through. These are tendencies, not predictions, and a well-placed Saturn can still read as real depth and steadiness.
Sect changes some of the maths too. In a night chart, the Lot of Fortune is measured from the Moon to the Sun and counted out from the ascendant, the reverse of the day formula, and the Lot of Spirit swaps the same way. Some systems of triplicity rulers (planets that look after each element) pick a night ruler for each element.
The tradition: A night chart isn’t a lesser chart. Each one gets a calmer troublemaker and a rowdier one.

Was I born in a night chart if I was born in the early morning?
If the Sun had not yet risen at your birthplace, yes. Summer dawns come early at high latitudes, so check where the Sun is in the chart rather than the clock.
Does a night chart make Saturn bad for me?
No. Saturn has fewer brakes in a night chart, but its sign, house and aspects still shape how it plays out. It names a pressure to understand, not an outcome.
Is my Sun sign less important in a night chart?
The Sun is not the sect light, but it remains a central placement. The Moon simply takes the leading role in the techniques that use sect.
Can a night chart have the Moon below the horizon too?
Yes. Sect depends only on the Sun. The Moon can be above or below the horizon in either kind of chart.
