What is my Human Design authority, and how do I decide?
In Human Design, Authority is the part of you built to make decisions. For almost everyone, it is not the mind. The mind is excellent at analysing, researching and explaining. It is poorly suited to deciding what is right for you, because it can argue convincingly for anything. Authority lives in the body: a gut response, an emotional wave settling over time, a quiet immediate knowing, or what you hear yourself say aloud.

The fuller answer
Many people have listed the pros and cons, chosen the winning column, and still felt uneasy. Authority explains why.
There are several kinds. Emotional Authority means waiting for the wave to pass before deciding, because there is no truth in the moment. Sacral Authority is an immediate gut yes or no. Splenic Authority is a quiet intuitive signal that speaks once and does not repeat itself. Others work through willpower, through talking it through, or, for Reflectors, through waiting a full lunar cycle. Knowing which is yours may be the most practical thing in your chart.
The mind is a brilliant researcher and an unreliable decision-maker.
The mind is not the problem. It is simply in the wrong role. It gathers information well, but it is always comparing, imagining and anticipating how a choice will look. Ask it to decide and it produces a well-reasoned answer that leaves the body cold.
This is why many people describe the same experience: they made the sensible choice, did everything correctly, and felt quietly wrong about it for years.
The decision was not bad. It was made by the part of them that did not know.
Authority is a skill that grows stronger with use.
If you have spent decades overriding your gut or rushing past your emotions, the signal will be faint at first. That is normal. Begin with small, low-stakes choices: what to eat, which invitation to accept, whether to take a call. Notice what the body does before the mind steps in.
Over time the signal strengthens and your trust in it grows. Decisions made from Authority tend to hold.
You stop second-guessing. You stop revisiting. That alone returns hours to most people's week.
Authority and Strategy work as a pair.
Strategy determines how something comes to you. Authority determines whether it is right. A Generator waits for something to respond to, then checks the gut. A Projector waits for the invitation, then consults their Authority. Without the first step, Authority has nothing honest to respond to.
This is why some people try Authority, find it confusing and give up. They are asking the body to judge things the mind began.
Together, the two make decisions simpler and noticeably calmer.
What your report covers
- Your Authority in plain English, and what it feels like from the inside
- How your mind tries to override it, and the particular ways it talks you out of things
- How to tell your Authority apart from fear, excitement and other people's opinions
- What timing means for you: when to decide, and when to wait
- Small daily practices to strengthen the signal
A look inside
Sample report · a fictional reader
You have rarely made a decision in the moment that you did not revisit at two in the morning. That is not indecision. It is your design asking you to wait.
You are built to decide over time, not on the spot.
Your emotions move in a wave: certain and bright one day, flat and doubtful the next. Neither end is the truth. The truth is what remains once the wave has passed. In a world that wants an answer by the end of the day, this is inconvenient. It is also why quick yeses so often become regret.
Urgency, yours or anyone else's, drowns out your Authority.
The mind dislikes waiting, and it is a persuasive advocate. It builds a case, writes the list and presses you to commit before the feeling has settled. Other people add to it. You absorb their urgency easily, and their deadline begins to feel like your conviction. This is why you agree to things in meetings and withdraw from them on the way home.
An important yes never needs to be given on the same day.
Say, “I'll come back to you tomorrow,” and mean it. Then check with yourself in three different states: once when you feel high, once when you feel low, once when you feel neutral. If the answer holds each time, it is your answer. Lived unconsciously, the wave makes your choices for you. Lived consciously, it gives you decisions you never need to make twice.
How Soul Cartography reads it
Authority is treated as something you feel, not a label you learn. The report concerns what your decision-making signal is like from the inside, what tends to drown it out, and how to tell it apart from nerves.
It is held within the rest of your chart, because what interferes with Authority is usually particular to you. It is then checked against your other systems, which often describe the same inner knowing in different words.
Then it is written for you, in a real voice, not from a template. No sun-sign paragraphs. No definitions you could find on the first page of a search. Every line has to be true for your chart and nobody else's.
The method is not published, the same way a good doctor does not hand you the textbook. What can be said is this: every system is one lens on you, and none of them is read alone. Where they line up, the report says so. Where they pull apart, it says that too, because that is often the part you recognise first.
Questions people ask
So I should never use my head to decide?
Use the mind for research, and to explain a decision to others afterwards. Do not ask it to make the decision. That belongs to your Authority. Most people find that once the mind is released from that role, it becomes quieter and far more useful.
What if I can't feel anything when I try?
That is common, especially after years of overriding yourself. The signal is still there. It is simply quiet. The report includes small, low-stakes practices to help you begin hearing it again.
Do I need my exact birth time?
It helps. Some of what is read moves every few minutes, so the closer your time, the sharper the report. If you only know it roughly, use your best guess and the report will say which parts lean on it. If you don't know it at all, you still get a real report. It simply won't claim to know what it can't.
How do I get my report?
By email, as a private link, within 24 hours. It is yours to keep. One purchase, no subscription. Most people come back to it later, often right after the thing it describes happens again.
