What do defined and open centres mean in Human Design?
The bodygraph has nine centres, the shapes on the chart. Each handles a different kind of energy: thinking, inspiration, expression, identity, willpower, emotion, life force, instinct and pressure. A coloured centre is defined: that energy runs consistently in you, the same way each day. A white centre is undefined or open: there, you take in the energy of those around you, and often amplify it.

The fuller answer
Some of what you feel is yours. Some of it belongs to the people you have been near today. The centres show the difference.
That one distinction explains a great deal. With an open emotional centre, you can walk into a room, feel everyone's mood more strongly than they do, and go home convinced it was yours. With an open heart centre, you may spend years trying to prove your worth. Open centres are not weaknesses. They are where you are most sensitive.
Your defined centres are the steady parts of you, and other people feel them.
Defined centres work the same way whether you are alone or in a crowd. They also affect the people around you, sometimes more than you realise. A defined emotional centre changes the temperature of a room. A defined will centre is felt as determination before you have spoken.
The work with defined centres is mostly trust.
Knowing which parts of you are steady lets you lean on them, and stop being surprised when others respond to them.
Open centres are where you absorb, and where you can become wise.
Open centres take in and amplify. Each carries a not-self question, a quiet story that steers decisions. Open head: am I still thinking about things that do not matter? Open emotional centre: am I avoiding confrontation and truth? Open heart: am I still trying to prove myself? Open spleen: am I holding on to what is not good for me?
Lived unconsciously, these questions run your choices without your knowing. Lived consciously, the same openness becomes discernment. Someone with an open emotional centre who stops owning every feeling in the room becomes remarkably good at reading people.
The sensitivity stays. The confusion goes.
How your centres connect shapes how whole you feel on your own.
Defined centres connect through channels, and how they connect matters. Some people have one continuous area of definition and process everything as a whole. Others have two or more separate areas, a split, and often sense that something is missing until the right person or environment bridges the gap.
If you have felt noticeably more whole around certain people, this may be why. It is not dependency. It is mechanics.
Knowing it lets you value the bridge without mistaking it for the only thing holding you together.

A look inside
Sample report · a fictional reader
You have spent years believing you are an anxious person. You may be a very sensitive person who keeps standing beside anxious ones.
Your direction is steady, and other people steer by it.
Your energy is consistent and your sense of direction is solid. You know where you are going, even when you cannot explain why. People find that grounding, and they are drawn to it, especially when they are lost. You are a fixed point. It is a gift, and it is also why you are so often the first call at midnight.
Your open emotional centre has been processing other people's feelings as your own.
You sense the mood of a room before you have taken your coat off. If someone is tense, you are tense. If someone is sad, you feel it more strongly than they do. Then you go home and try to work out what is wrong with you. Often, nothing is. Much of what you have processed for years was borrowed.
You do not need to stop feeling everything; you need to stop owning everything.
The next time a feeling arrives in company, ask one question: is this mine? Then leave the room for two minutes. If the feeling eases, it was not yours, and it is not yours to fix. Practise this for a week. Lived unconsciously, openness means carrying the room home with you. Lived consciously, it lets you understand the room and leave it behind.
How Soul Cartography reads it
Think of the centres as a map of where you are yourself and where you are everyone else. The aim is practical: by the end, you should be able to enter a room and know which feelings are yours to address and which can be left at the door.
Particular attention goes to the open centres causing the most difficulty now, because that is where the relief is. What appears there is then checked against your other systems, which often describe the same sensitivity from another angle.
Then it is written for you, in a real voice, not from a template. No sun-sign paragraphs. No definitions you could find on the first page of a search. Every line has to be true for your chart and nobody else's.
The method is not published, the same way a good doctor does not hand you the textbook. What can be said is this: every system is one lens on you, and none of them is read alone. Where they line up, the report says so. Where they pull apart, it says that too, because that is often the part you recognise first.
Questions people ask
Is it bad to have lots of open centres?
No. Open centres are where you are most sensitive and, with awareness, most wise. People with a great deal of openness often understand others deeply. The work is learning what to keep and what to set down.
What's the difference between undefined and open?
In general use, an undefined centre has some activated gates within it, and a fully open centre has none. Both take in energy from others, in different ways. The report explains what that means for your own centres.
Do I need my exact birth time?
It helps. Some of what is read moves every few minutes, so the closer your time, the sharper the report. If you only know it roughly, use your best guess and the report will say which parts lean on it. If you don't know it at all, you still get a real report. It simply won't claim to know what it can't.
How do I get my report?
By email, as a private link, within 24 hours. It is yours to keep. One purchase, no subscription. Most people come back to it later, often right after the thing it describes happens again.
