Astrology, Human Design and Gene Keys: how they fit together

The short answer: They aren't rivals. All three start from the same birth date, time and place, and each one answers a different question about you. Astrology reads the sky by sign and house, for who you are and what's moving through your life. Human Design turns the same planets into a bodygraph of 64 gates, for how you're built to decide and spend your energy. Gene Keys reads those same 64 as a path from Shadow to Gift, for the pattern you're stuck in and the way out of it.

Three maps of the same person

You look up your Sun sign, then your Human Design type, then a Gene Key. Each one sounds a bit like you and a bit like a stranger. Three answers. Which one's right?

Wrong question, as it happens. It isn't a vote. They're three maps of one person, drawn from the same birth date, time and place, each built for a different job. Once you know the job, they stop competing and start filling in each other's blanks.

Astrology: the sky at your birth

The widest view of the three: who you are, who you love, what keeps coming back around. Astrology starts with where the planets stood when you were born, then reads them by sign, house and aspect (the angles between planets).

It's also the oldest, with many schools, Hellenistic and Vedic among them, that don't always agree with each other. The same placements can read differently depending on the zodiac used, and tropical and sidereal astrology shows how.

Birth time matters here. It sets your rising sign, the sign on the eastern horizon when you were born, and it sets the houses, the twelve areas of life the chart is divided into.

Human Design: how you're built to decide

This is the practical one. How do you make a decision you won't regret? Where does your energy actually come from? Why are you exhausted doing what everyone says works? Human Design answers with your Type, Strategy, Authority and Profile: how you're wired, how to move, how to choose, and the role you play with other people.

The mechanics: it takes the same planetary positions and reads them twice, at your birth and again at the moment the Sun stood 88 degrees earlier, about three months before. Both sets land on a diagram called the bodygraph, built from 64 gates and nine centres.

Birth time matters most here. The Moon moves fast, so a few minutes can change which gate and line it sits in.

Gene Keys: the same 64, as a path

Where Human Design says how you're built, Gene Keys asks what you do with it. The Shadow is the pattern that runs you without your noticing, and most of us live there most of the time. The Gift is the way out of it. The Siddhi is where that way leads. The Gift is a direction, not a test, so if it doesn't sound like you yet, good.

The mechanics: Gene Keys, written by Richard Rudd, uses the same wheel of 64. Each Gene Key carries the number of the Human Design gate it sits in, and each has those three levels: Shadow, Gift and Siddhi.

Where they overlap: the 64

Here's the hinge of the whole idea. Your Sun sits somewhere on a wheel of 64 sections, and so does every other planet. Human Design calls the sections gates. Gene Keys calls them keys. Both draw the wheel from the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching.

So when your Sun sits in Gate 37, it sits in Gene Key 37 too. Same position, two languages. One tells you how that energy shows up in your decisions and your body. The other tells you what its Shadow looks like and where the Gift is hiding.

Astrology is the odd one out, in the best way. It divides the sky into twelve signs and twelve houses, not 64, so it speaks in a different register: timing, relationships, the wider cast of characters in your life. Each map says things the others can't.

which is “more accurate”, or which describes you best. They read the same birth for different jobs, and each one plays by its own rules.

What happens when they disagree

Sometimes they point in different directions. Your birth chart says one thing about how you handle conflict and your bodygraph says another. That's not an error. It's often the most recognisable part of a person, because most people aren't one thing.

We keep the disagreement in your reading instead of smoothing it over, and we say which map each line came from. When more than one agrees, you'll hear that too.

You don't have to believe any of them. Hold each against what you notice in your own life, and what fits stays.

Where to start

Start with whichever question is loudest. What's going on in my life? Begin with astrology and your birth chart. Why do I keep making the same kind of decision? Begin with your Human Design chart. What do I do about the pattern? Begin with your Gene Keys profile. All three are free, no account, together on the free charts page.

Once you've seen your three charts, the Incarnation Manual reads them as one, across nine areas of your life, with every line showing where it came from. Want a taste first? A whole chapter is free.

Common questions

Do I need all three?

No. Each one stands on its own. Your Incarnation Manual reads all three for you, each in its own language, and tells you which tradition every line comes from.

Which should I start with?

Astrology for the big picture of your life, Human Design for how you decide and use your energy, Gene Keys for a pattern to work with over time. They're all free, so you can try each.

Why does my Gene Key share a number with my Human Design gate?

Both systems use the same wheel of 64, drawn from the I Ching, and a Gene Key takes the number of the gate it sits in. Same position, read in two languages.

What if they seem to disagree?

That happens, and it's allowed. We keep the disagreement in your reading and say which map each line came from.
