How the Lunar Design Is Calculated

Credit where it's due: the lunar (Moonlight) chart, the Lunar Incarnation Cross, the lunar synthesis and the Bearing are NightNight Charts' methods. Our engine runs them, and this page shows our working.

The short answer: In our lunar chart, the Design moment doesn't move. It's still the standard Human Design moment, when the Sun stood 88° behind its birth position, about three months before birth. What we add is a measurement: across that same window the Moon travels roughly 1,150° to 1,210°, close to three full cycles of phases, and we report that arc for every birth. This is Soul Cartography's extension, not part of standard Human Design, and the lunar reading built on it is experimental.

The standard Design moment

Human Design reads two moments. The Personality is the moment of birth. The Design is the moment before birth when the Sun stood exactly 88° of longitude behind where it is at birth. Because the Sun's apparent speed varies through the year, that comes to between about 86.6 and 92 days.

Every planet's position at that earlier moment becomes the Design side of the chart. The Moon's Design gate is simply wherever the Moon was at that instant.

The tradition: The 88° solar arc is standard Human Design. We use the same moment, found the same way, in both the standard and the lunar chart.

Why we don't move it

The obvious move for a Moon-led chart would be to solve the 88° against the Moon instead, and find the moment the Moon stood 88° behind its birth position. That lands about a week before birth, on a completely different premise. We passed.

Then we noticed something: measured by the Moon, the standard window is already lunar. In those 86.6 to 92 days the Moon goes round the zodiac a little over three times and completes between about 2.94 and 3.11 cycles of phases, against 88.59 days for three average lunar months. To within a few per cent, the Human Design prenatal window is a three-lunation window. That is a near-coincidence, not an identity, so we report the actual figure for each birth rather than the round number.

Soul Cartography: Reading the 88° window as a three-lunation window is our observation. Human Design does not describe it this way, and we make no claim about why the 88° was chosen.

Two numbers that are easy to confuse

A chart shows longitude on a 360° circle, so a Moon that travelled 1,176° between the two moments appears to have moved only 96°. The three completed laps vanish. So we report two different numbers.

Both describe the same interval. Saying that 88° of Sun corresponds to so many degrees of Moon means equal elapsed time, not equal angles.

  • The zodiacal displacement: the visible difference on the 360° circle. This is what already sets the Design Moon's gate and line in the standard chart.
  • The full lunar arc: the whole distance travelled, completed laps included. This is the new number, and it differs from birth to birth.

Soul Cartography: The full lunar arc is reported with each lunar chart as information about the window. It does not currently change any gate, line or Type.

Where the lunar calculation does differ

The only new positions in the lunar chart are the two lunar Earth points: the Moon's longitude plus 180° at birth and at the Design moment, converted to a gate and line on the same 64-gate wheel the standard chart uses. Because 180° is exactly 32 gates, a lunar Earth always carries the same line as the Moon it opposes.

Everything else in the lunar chart is read from positions the standard chart already has: the two Moon lines, the Moon's colour for two of the Variables, and the full set of gates from which structure is recomputed.

The method

The current method

  • Find the Design moment by solving for the instant the Sun stood 88° of ecliptic longitude behind its birth position, with the same search the standard chart uses.
  • Take the Moon's geocentric ecliptic longitude at both moments from the Swiss Ephemeris. The difference on the 360° circle is the zodiacal displacement.
  • Count the Moon's completed laps by stepping through the window every six hours and adding up each step's movement, then rebuild the full arc exactly as laps × 360° plus the displacement, so stepping error cannot enter the reported value.
  • Check, every time, that walking back from the birth Moon by the full arc lands on the Design Moon within 0.01°, and report the result.
  • Report the interval in days, the solar arc (88°), the full lunar arc, the cycles of phases ((lunar arc − 88°) ÷ 360°) and the difference from three mean lunar months (3 × 29.530588 days).
  • For the lunar chart, place a lunar Earth at the Moon's longitude plus 180° at both moments and convert it with the standard gate mapping.

Why we do it this way

  • Keeping the standard Design moment means the standard and lunar charts share every planetary position, so differences between them come from the rules alone.
  • Solving 88° against the Moon would create a second, unrelated Design moment about a week before birth, with no basis in Human Design or in sect.
  • Reporting the full arc, not just the visible displacement, keeps the three-lunation observation checkable for every birth instead of asserted as a round number.

What it assumes

  • That the standard 88° solar window is the right window for a Moon-led reading as well.
  • That the Moon's geocentric longitude never runs backwards, which is what lets the lap count be recovered by adding up small steps. This holds for the Moon.
  • That the point opposite the Moon is meaningful as a grounding point, as Earth opposite the Sun is in standard Human Design.

What is still experimental

  • The lunar Earth points, the only new positions the lunar chart introduces.
  • Any interpretive weight given to the three-lunation observation. At present it is reported, not interpreted.

What would change or falsify it

  • A failed runtime check (a residual above 0.01°) would mean the lap count is wrong for that birth. The result records the failure rather than hiding it.
  • If readings built on the lunar Earth do not hold up against readers' experience, that rule is the first to revise, because it is the largest departure from the standard chart.
  • If births turned up whose window strays further from three lunations than the range stated here, the observation would need restating. Each result carries its own deviation from 88.59 days, so this can be checked.

Common questions

Does lunar Human Design use a different Design date?

No. It uses the standard Design moment, when the Sun stood 88° behind its birth position. Only the way we measure and read that window is new.

Is the three-lunation window part of Human Design?

No. It is our observation about the standard window, and it is approximate: between about 2.94 and 3.11 cycles of phases, depending on the time of year.

Why not count 88° of the Moon instead?

That picks a moment about a week before birth, on a premise neither Human Design nor sect supports. We kept the established moment.

Is the calculation checkable?

Yes. Each lunar result carries the interval in days, the full lunar arc, the cycles of phases and the result of a check that the arc leads back to the Design Moon. Where the code lives is listed on this page.
