What Is Lunar Human Design?

Credit where it's due: the lunar (Moonlight) chart, the Lunar Incarnation Cross, the lunar synthesis and the Bearing are NightNight Charts' methods. Our engine runs them, and this page shows our working.

The short answer: Lunar Human Design is NightNight Charts' extension of Human Design, run in our engine. It isn't part of standard Human Design. It recalculates your chart with the Moon in the lead instead of the Sun: your Profile lines come from your two Moons, Earth moves opposite the Moon, and Type, Authority and the rest get worked out again from there. The Sun stays, with every gate it activates. We run it next to your standard chart, never instead of it. You'll find it in Soul Charts, and your Incarnation Manual reads what it changes, weighted by whether you were born by day or night. Fair warning: the method is still experimental.

What standard Human Design reads from the Sun

In standard Human Design, the Sun does most of the heavy lifting. Your Profile is the line of your Personality Sun over the line of your Design Sun. Earth is always the point directly opposite the Sun. Your Incarnation Cross is named from those four Sun and Earth gates, and two of the four Variables, Digestion and Motivation, are read from the Sun's colour at each moment.

The Moon is already in every standard chart. It activates one gate at birth and another at the Design moment, and those count toward your channels and centres like any other planet's. What it doesn't get to do is set the Profile, the Earth point or the Variables.

The tradition: In Human Design as Ra Uru Hu defined it, there are twelve Profiles, Earth is taken opposite the Sun, and Digestion and Motivation are read from the Sun. None of the lunar recalculation on this page is part of it.

What the lunar chart changes

The lunar chart keeps every activation from the standard chart and hands the points worked out from the Sun over to the Moon. Nothing gets deleted.

Profile lines: your Personality Moon line over your Design Moon line, in place of the two Sun lines.
Earth: placed exactly opposite the Moon (the Moon's longitude plus 180°), at birth and at the Design moment. The usual Earth opposite the Sun is set aside in this chart only.
Structure: gates, channels, centres, definition, Type and Authority are recomputed from the resulting gates. Because the two Earth gates change, a channel can complete as well as break.
Variables: Digestion and Motivation are read from the Moon's colour. Environment and Perspective come from the Nodes and do not move.
The Sun: kept, with every gate and channel it activates, as the secondary light.

Soul Cartography: Moving the Earth point is the biggest break from standard Human Design, and no established Human Design or Gene Keys source backs it. Every lunar chart says so, right on it.

Why a Moon-led chart

The idea comes from sect, an old astrology rule that splits charts into day births and night births. In a day chart the Sun leads. In a night chart the Moon does. Sect never kicks the Sun out of a night chart. It just changes who's in charge.

Lunar Human Design asks the same question of the bodygraph: if the Moon leads, what does the chart look like when the points usually read off the Sun are read off the Moon instead? An earlier version deleted the Sun altogether. We dropped it, because sect never does that, and because a chart that only subtracts can break channels but never complete one.

The tradition: Sect is a distinction from traditional astrology. Standard Human Design has no equivalent of it; carrying it into Human Design is our step.

What it produces that the standard chart cannot

The two Sun lines are tied together by the fixed 88° between the Personality and Design Sun, which is why there are only twelve Profiles. The two Moons are not tied that way, so a lunar line pair can be any of 36 combinations, and 24 of them are not Human Design Profiles. We do not give those 24 meanings as if they were Profiles. Every lunar pair is read as a Nocturnal Line Signature, built from what each line means on its own.

The cross works the same way. The Design Moon sits roughly 54° to 144° behind the Personality Moon rather than a fixed 88°, so a lunar set of four gates is almost never a standard Incarnation Cross. We call it a Lunar Incarnation Cross and name it from NightNight Charts' own tables, rather than borrowing standard cross names.

Soul Cartography: A lunar chart can show a Type, an Authority or a line pairing no Human Design book describes. That's expected, it happens a lot, and it has no traditional meaning.

The method

The current method

Compute the standard chart first and return it unchanged: the same ephemeris, the same Design moment (the Sun 88° behind its birth position) and the same 64-gate wheel.
Copy its activations. Mark the Personality and Design Sun as the secondary light and the two Moons as the primary light.
At each of the two moments, set the usual Earth aside and add a lunar Earth at the Moon's longitude plus 180°, converted to a gate and line on the same wheel.
Recompute channels, centres, definition, Type, Strategy and Authority from the resulting gates, and record which gates were lost or gained against the standard chart.
Take the line pair from the Personality and Design Moon, and read Digestion and Motivation from the Moon's colour at the matching moment. Each moved value records the standard value it replaced.

Why we do it this way

Sect: in traditional astrology the Moon leads a night chart while the Sun stays in it. Keeping the Sun and moving only the points derived from it is the closest translation of that idea into a bodygraph.
Comparability: the standard chart is never altered, so every difference between the two charts can be traced to a named rule and a specific activation.
Coherence: moving the Profile without the Earth point and the Variables would leave half the chart on each light. An earlier Profile-only version was dropped for that reason.

What it assumes

That the Moon can take the role the Sun plays in Human Design's derived points. Human Design does not say this; it is our premise.
That the point opposite the Moon is a meaningful grounding point, as Earth opposite the Sun is in standard Human Design.
That the birth time is known. Moon lines and the day or night classification can change within minutes, and the engine declines a birth with no time rather than assuming noon.

What is still experimental

The whole lunar chart, which is labelled as NightNight Charts' extension wherever it appears, in Soul Charts and in the Manual.
The lunar Earth, the largest single departure from standard Human Design.
Reading Digestion and Motivation from the Moon instead of the Sun.
The interpretive texts: Nocturnal Line Signatures, Lunar Incarnation Cross names and encyclopedia entries are written by us and looked up from fixed tables, not generated.

What would change or falsify it

If people born at night do not find the lunar chart more recognisable than people born by day, the sect premise is weakened. That comparison has not been run yet.
Chart structure alone gives no support for the method. Our 20,000-birth study of the related lunar Gene Keys profile found that lunar positions link to the rest of a chart at the same rates as a Moon taken from a different birth, by day and by night. Any support would have to come from readers' experience.
With only two charts, we cannot separate the effect of the Profile change from the effect of the structural recalculation. If readers respond to one and not the other, the method would need to be split back apart to find out which.

Common questions

Is lunar Human Design part of Human Design?

No. It is NightNight Charts' extension, which Soul Cartography computes. Standard Human Design reads the Profile, the Earth point and two Variables from the Sun; this method reads them from the Moon, and no Human Design school teaches it.

Does it replace my Human Design chart?

No. Your standard chart is always computed first and is never changed. The lunar chart sits beside it as a comparison.

Is it only for people born at night?

It can be computed for any birth with a known time, so anyone can compare the two. The premise comes from night births, where the Moon leads in traditional sect, and the result says which applies to you.

Why does my lunar chart show a Profile that does not exist?

Most Moon line pairs are not among the twelve Human Design Profiles. We read them as Nocturnal Line Signatures, from what each line means on its own, and do not give them a traditional meaning.

Has it been validated?

No. The calculation is tested and reproducible, but there's no evidence yet that the lunar chart describes anyone better or worse than the standard one. Hold it up against your own life and see what you recognise.
